Officer Zach Ervin with the Greenville Police Department is one of our finalists for the 4th Annual Greg Alia Award. Read more on Officer Ervin from the perspective of a student whose life he touched in his role as a School Resource Officer.

To Whom It May Concern:

I would like to nominate School Resource Officer Zachary Ervin for the Officer Gregory Alia Award. I have known Officer Ervin since sixth grade when I started at [my school] and have also known him as the Assistant Band Director of the Greenville High School Marching Band where I have been participating since the summer before seventh grade.  I think Officer Ervin is deserving of this award because he is relatable to the students and builds relationships with them not only by doing his job but by being their friends which is not always easy when you are armed. I often see him patrolling the halls, stopping to talk to students and faculty about real life issues and not trying to check things off a list.  When he stops to talk to the kids, he talks to them in a joking but professional manner. This makes people feel comfortable and trusting around him even when there is a serious topic he needs to discuss.

Since I have been in middle school there have been several school shootings in the United States. I feel safer knowing that Officer Ervin is guarding the school and feel confident he would protect us if something ever happened.

And even though he is off duty when serving with the marching band, he still treats all the students (even the high schoolers) the same way as when he is at Hughes.  When I was a rising eighth grader, I wanted to stay on the bass drum for the drumline because that is what I played the previous year and I knew I could do it.  Zach challenged me to play snare which was a lot harder.  There were a lot of times when I wanted to give up but Zach was always there to help me get better and helped me gain confidence.  This past spring I was accepted into the Fine Arts Center for percussion and I know that part of the reason for that is because Zach pushed me to do things I thought I couldn’t.

Yours truly,

[A Student in Greenville]
